2021 Home Run Derby

At the first derby there were ten players , by the second the number was down to six and the third only featured four sluggers. From 2005 to 2013, a gold ball has been used once a player reaches nine outs (in 2014 when the T-Mobile Ball came into play, six; since 2015, during the final minute). If a batter hit a home run using the golden ball, Century 21 Real Estate and Major League Baseball would donate $21,000 (a reference to the "21" in "Century 21") per home run to charity . In both 2005 and 2006, $294,000 was raised for the charities, equaling fourteen golden ball home runs per year.

Semifinals matchups were determined by first round home run totals, with the season-to-date home run total being the tie-breaker. In 2019, MLB introduced a $1 million bonus for the winning player, as an incentive to have more top-rank stars take part in the event. In 2005, as part of the announcement of the inaugural World Baseball Classic, the derby featured eight players representing their native countries rather than their respective leagues.

Each round stands alone, with the score reset for each round. If the players remain tied, the players engage in a sudden-death swing-off until one player homers. A "home run" in the context of the competition, consists of hitting a baseball in fair territory out of the playing field on the fly. It differs from a home run hit during legal gameplay in that the batter is not competing against a pitcher and a defensive team attempting to make an out.

The 2021 Home Run Derby field features some of the best sluggers in the game today. Immediately following the Derby, ESPN will air the annual celebrity softball game, which features a mix of former baseball stars, professional athletes, celebrities, and social media stars. Hitters are entitled to one 45-second timeout in each round, though that doesn’t extend into a batter’s bonus time.

He broke that record in the following round, hitting 40 home runs in 2 tiebreakers. The previous overall record was set in 2016 by Giancarlo Stanton, who finished with a total of 61 home runs, defeating Todd Frazier in the final round. The current overall record is held by Guerrero Jr. at a mark of 91, set in 2019. Only three participants, Yoenis Céspedes, Stanton, and Pete Alonso, have won the Home Run Derby without being selected to the All-Star Game. Alonso broke Guerrero's first-round record in 2021 with 35 homers on his way to his second straight Derby Title .

A favorite coming into the night and a heavy favorite after his seemingly effortless 51 homers across the first two rounds, Alonso remained serene on the staging couch as he watched Trey Mancini put up 22 dingers. That was a daunting target (just one shy of Alonso’s final round record of 23 back in 2019), but the Polar Bear’s first swing -- a 111 mph, 509-foot shot toward the left-field concourse -- erased any sign of nerves. One of the game's exciting young talents will be putting his swing on display in the Home Run Derby when Nationals outfielder Juan Sotosteps up to the plate. Ties in any round are broken by a 60-second tiebreaker with no bonus time or timeouts.

A home run will count if the timer hits zero, so long as the pitch was released beforehand. If the second contestant in the matchup exceeds their opponents home run total, the round ends. This time there were four players from each league competing, however, with one all-NL and one all-AL match-up in the first round. The American League easily won the competition between the leagues, with 116 homers to 75.

In 2000, the field reverted to the current four-player-per-league format. The only exception was 2005, when Major League Baseball changed the selection criteria so that eight players represented their home countries instead of their respective leagues. The change was believed to be in promotion of the inaugural World Baseball Classic, played in March 2006.

However, as there were five players from the National League competing against three American Leaguers, the NL's big lead in total homers was almost a foregone conclusion. The rules changed once again in 2006, when total home runs replaced round by round totals. The top four hitters in the first round advanced to the semifinals, and their home run total from the first round carried into the semifinals. The two players with the most home runs in the semifinals (which included the player's first round clouts) advanced to the finals. The format of the derby was changed in 2000 when, after the first round, the four advancing players were put into two seeded brackets, with the winners of each match-up advancing to the finals. We still think he should do half his swings left-handed and half of them right-handed. First off, it's just fantastic to have a catcher in this competition. We haven't had one since Gary Sánchez in 2017 (and before him none since Joe Mauer in '09). Perez has turned into quite a power source in addition to his leadership and defensive skills, a turn for the better that first showed itself late in the '20 season, after missing all of the '19 season. It'll be a blast to see him give it a go in the name of catchers everywhere. That said, no catcher has ever won this, and it's tough to see Perez outlasting some of the other names on this list.

The running clock will only be two minutes in the final round. The American League won the contest over the National League, 52 homers to 24. A bracket format was used, with the top home run hitter for each league in the first round getting a bye directly into the semifinal round, to face the second round winner. In the early years of the Home Run Derby, 4-10 players from both the AL and NL were selected to participate. Each player was given 2 "innings" to hit as many home runs as possible before reaching 5 outs.

They pledged $17,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs across the country for every home run hit with 9 outs. The 17,000 supposedly represents the number of State Farm Agents across the country. The 1988 derby at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, OH was cancelled due to rain.

If you’re gonna have a hometown guy, you might as well pick the one Rockie currently in double figures in homers. With as much pure power as anyone in the Majors, O'Neill could make the Derby his perfect coming-out party as a slugger. He won one as a National, so now it’s time to win one as a Phillie. The most surprising story of the Rangers’ season, and maybe the best thing they’ve got going moving forward. His teammate and fellow Matt -- Chapman -- has been in the Derby before, but Olson, the real power hitter of the Matts, never has.
